Day Three...
To the Acropolis
To the Acropolis
The day started off fairly early, we had a 9 AM tour of the Acropolis. I took a shower around 6 AM and the shower flooded the bathroom. Jason had mentioned something about the floor flooding yesterday, but I figured it was from the lack of a shower door. The water was coming out of the floor drain. I notified the Air B&B owners and they said they would have it looked at while we were out.
We walked to McDonald's near the meeting point and I had a McTasty which is a quarter pounder like burger and some chicken wings (?!?) which were delicious and a McCoco which ended up being a chocolate filled doughnut hole. Jason had a small Big Mac which is just a one patty burger with Mac sauce. He said his was pretty good. While I was waiting on my food, Jason got us some Coke Zeros from the local market. After eating, we went to the meet up point and got our ear pieces which enabled us to hear the tour guide through a microphone without needing a loudspeaker.
The tour was interesting, it included stories about how theater was invented by worshipping Dionysus, and how ancient Greeks had sick people lay on the ground with non venomous snakes to get better. We went all the way to the Acropolis and walked around and toured the outside then had a tour of the museum. The museum has see through glass floors that allowed you to see the city ruins beneath the museum but you could also look up and see people walking around 1 or 2 stories above you which was interesting.
The museum has a lot of empty spots for missing pieces that are kept in museums outside of Greece that they want returned. The British Museum has most of the missing pieces and refuses to return them.
After the museum tours, Jason and I toured the ruins beneath the museum and saw how the houses used to be laid out with running water and indoor plumbing in ancient times.
Afterwards, we went to lunch and had gyros again from a different place. They were smaller and not as good as the place yesterday. While taking my tray back to the counter, some woman asked me to seat her party of 4, I told her I didn't work there, but apparently I looked like I did.
The Air B&B owners notified me that the plumbing was fixed and they left us some spinach pie and orange syrup cake in the fridge for our trouble.
We wantered around some more and looked around the city some more, then came back to the room. Jason's back was hurting, and he wanted to lay down for a bit, so we laid down and talked.
We talked about sports and what constitutes a "sport" vs a "game". Jason had a series of rules for what a sport is. For example, according to Jason, a sport must be something that is measured and not subjective, something that doesn't need a competitor to be done, something that is physically exhausting and something that does not include points. He agreed that track and field events as well as swimming and weight lifting were all sports. Basketball, archery and bowling were games due to a violation of one of his standards. We disagreed on competitive eating (specifically hotdog eating) as a sport...you know, we talked about very important matters...
After we talked for a while, Jason wanted to see more of the city, so we wondered around some more and saw various parts of the city and it's ruins and government buildings and talked about a number of things that fathers and sons talk about...like life and Jason's plans for living in Europe and Asia for the next year or more.
We started walking back and Jason wanted a Grimace milkshake, he wanted one in the morning, but the McDonald's we were at were sold out of them. We got him a Grimace milkshake and continued to wander the city. We saw some band play at the square near the Air B&B and then went to a Mediterranean restaurant and split a Peynirli with ground beef. It looks like a pizza boat, and it was pretty good.
We returned to the room and we went to the roof to see the rooftop patio and look for the laundry room. The rooftop patio was nice and we took pictures with the Acropolis in the background. Jason went to look for the Laundry room while I called Jen. Jen didn't answer and Jason called Sierra so I stayed on the roof to give him some privacy. Eventually, Jen called me back and I spent some time talking with her.
When I got back to the room, Jason had washed his clothing in the sink, despite me sending him information from the Air B&B hosts about were the laundry room was located and we went to bed. The plan for tomorrow is to go to the beach and for Jason to go to the hostal for the night to get a feel for it before I leave him here to begin his adventures.
